Prabhat Jha

Professor Prabhat Jha has been a key figure in epidemiology and economics of global health for the past decade. He is the University of Toronto Endowed Professor in Disease Control and Canada Research Chair at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the founding Director of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Professor Jha is a lead investigator of the Million Death Study in India, which quantifies the causes of premature mortality in over one million homes from 1997-2014 and which examines the contribution of key risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, diet and environmental exposures. He is co-investigator of the Disease Control Priorities Network and the author of several influential books on tobacco control, including two that helped enable a global treaty on tobacco control, now signed by over 160 countries. Professor Jha has previously held senior positions at the World Bank and at the World Health Organization. His advisory work has included the Government of South Africa on its national health insurance plan, and the United States Institute of Medicine on global health. His recognitions include the Professional Male of the Year Award, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (2010), Top 40 Canadians under Age 40 Award (2004), the Ontario Premier’s Research Excellence Award (2004) and a Gold Medal from the Poland Health Promotion Foundation (2000).  Professor Jha holds an M.D. from the University of Manitoba and a D. Phil. from Oxford University, where he studied as a Canadian Rhodes Scholar.

Le professeur Prabhat Jha joue un rôle de premier plan en épidémiologie et en économie de la santé mondiale depuis les 10 dernières années. Il est professeur émérite en contrôle des maladies à l’Université de Toronto et titulaire de la chaire de recherche du Canada à la Dalla Lana School of Public Health, et directeur fondateur du Centre for Global Health Research à l’Hôpital St. Michael’s de Toronto. Le professeur Jha est chercheur principal à la Million Death Study, en Inde, qui quantifie les causes de la mortalité prématurée dans plus d’un million de résidences de 1997 à 2014 et qui examine la contribution de facteurs de risque importants comme le tabac, l’alcool, l’alimentation et l’exposition aux facteurs environnementaux. Il est cochercheur au Disease Control Priorities Network et l’auteur de plusieurs livres influents sur le contrôle du tabac, dont deux qui ont servi à l’élaboration d’un traité mondial sur la lutte au tabagisme, maintenant signé par plus de 160 pays. Le professeur Jha a auparavant occupé des postes supérieurs à la Banque mondiale et à l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé. Il a notamment conseillé le gouvernement de l’Afrique du Sud sur son régime d’assurance-maladie national, et la United States Institute of Medicine sur la santé mondiale. Parmi les distinctions qu’il a reçues, mentionnons le prix du professionnel de l’année par la Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (2010), il a reçu le prix Top 40 Canadians under Age 40 Award (2004), le prix d’excellence en recherche du premier ministre de l’Ontario (2004), et une médaille d’or de la Poland Health Promotion Foundation (2000). Le professeur Jha détient un doctorat en médecine de l’Université du Manitoba et un doctorat de l’Université Oxford, où il a étudié en tant que boursier canadien de la fondation Rhodes.
