Martha Piper, both through her direct work as President of the University of British Columbia and through her service on critical national panels and boards, has played a pivotal role in the expansion and transformation of health sciences research in Canada over the past decade. Dr. Piper’s advocacy and guidance were instrumental in bringing to fruition such important developments as Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Canada Research Chairs program, the Canada Millennium Scholarships and the Indirect Costs of Research program. Her leadership has helped to shape an entirely new landscape for the academic health sciences in Canada.
