Fernand Labrie previously held the position of president of Le Fonds de la recherche en Santé du Québec and is currently Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology, and Director of Research at the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier du I’Universite Laval. His research with LHRH agonists developed a procedure for medical castration that has replaced surgical castration for the past 25 years. Dr. Labrie also discovered the process of combined androgen blockade, the gold standard hormonal therapy for prostate cancer and the first treatment shown to prolong life in prostate cancer patients. He and his colleagues introduced and widely applied the field of intracrinology, pertaining to the local formation and action of sex steroids in peripheral tissues. Dr. Labrie is an Officer of the Order of Canada and the Order of Quebec.
