David Hanley is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Oncology, and Community
Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and a member of the Division of
Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Calgary Health Region. He is Medical Director of
the Calgary Health Region’s Osteoporosis Centre.
Dr. Hanley’s research interests have included parathyroid cell regulation, and the clinical
research areas of normal and abnormal calcium and skeletal metabolism. He is a member
of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council, which he chaired from 1991-1995,
and has just finished his term as President of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and
Metabolism. With respect to vitamin D, Dr. Hanley has chaired Osteoporosis Canada’s
Vitamin D Guidelines committee, and led the writing of Osteoporosis Canada’s vitamin D
Guidelines document, which is currently in press in the Canadian Medical Association
Journal. He is also on the Endocrine Society’s Guidelines committee for vitamin D, and
was a member of the University of Ottawa’s expert panel which won the contract to
prepare a comprehensive literature review and report for the United States government’s
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), on the effectiveness and safety of
vitamin D in relation to bone health.
