ANNETTE MAJNEMER

Recent medical and surgical advances have resulted in declining mortality in high-risk newborns, with a shift in focus from survival to sequelae. Dr. Majnemer has characterized a spectrum of impairments, functional limitations and quality of life of NICU survivors such as premature infants and those with congenital heart defects. Elucidation of biomedical, personal and environmental factors as determinants of disability have broadened our understanding of mechanisms underlying injury and identified potentially modifiable factors to be considered in rehabilitation interventions. As an occupational therapist and neuroscientist, Dr. Majnemer integrates current concepts of brain structure and vulnerability with child and family functioning.
